self-care is not selfish
‘Love
your
neighbor
as
yourself’
Taking care of our emotional, physical and spiritual self is not selfish. We spend time taking care of others first, we make family, friends and work our priorities. We fly headlong into doing for others without setting boundaries. And we don’t see how it may indirectly impact us, in the moment or in the future. We just power through taking care of our “to do lists.”
We should acknowledge to ourselves that it’s ok to take steps to take care of our physical health and well being, including hygiene, nutrition, managing stressors, and seeking medical care if needed.
In essence, we must love ourselves, show self-care and self-compassion so that we can effectively follow God’s commandment to love our neighbor as we love ourselves(1). We cannot love others if we have no love and care for ourselves.
